Understanding the Difference Between Local Moving & Long Distance Moving

Moving is a major event that takes a lot of preparation and planning, and determining the right type of move is essential in making sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible. There are two main types of moves: local moves and long-distance moves. While both types of moves require the a great deal of preparation and planning, they do have some key differences that should be taken into consideration when deciding which type is best for you. So whether you're moving from Glastonbury, CT to Hartford, CT or from Middletown CT to Manchester, NH, here are the basics of local and long-distance moves so you can make an informed decision.

What is a Long Distance Move?

A long-distance move is typically a relocation involving moving a significant distance, typically exceeding 100 miles or more. However, the exact distance that qualifies as a long-distance move may vary depending on the context and regional differences. Here are some general guidelines:

  1. Interstate Moves: In the United States, an interstate move refers to moving between two different states. Any move that requires crossing state lines is generally considered long-distance, regardless of the specific distance involved.
  2. International Moves: Moving to a different country is always considered a long-distance move due to the substantial geographical and logistical challenges associated with crossing international borders.
  3. Intra-State Moves: The definition of a long-distance move within a single state may vary. Some states consider moves within their boundaries exceeding a certain distance, such as 100 miles (160 kilometers), as long-distance moves. Other states may use different thresholds or define long-distance moves based on regional factors.

It's important to note that while distance is a significant factor, other elements such as the complexity of the move, transportation logistics, and the need for professional movers also contribute to categorizing a move as long-distance.

What is a Local Move?

Unlike long-distance moves, local moves are typically defined by the distance between the origin and destination. Generally, any move less than 100 miles (160 kilometers) is considered a local move. However, this definition may vary depending on regional definitions and circumstances.

Local moves often involve transporting belongings from one home to another within the same city, and sometimes even within the same building or apartment complex. In some cases, local moves may involve moving items to a storage facility until they can be relocated to the new destination.
